This Week in Geekery

Oh my God, they ate Kenny!

Oh my God, they ate Kenny!

I think I’ve discovered a definitive example of irony. Of all the hard drives I’ve used, in all of the PC’s I’ve built over the years, the first drive that has ever crashed on me turns out to be the only one I’ve ever used with no moving parts (my SSD). Fortunately it was just my OS drive, so I didn’t lose any data. Unfortunately, it was my OS drive – so I spent most of this week installing things.

Cloud backup for data is great – just remember not to neglect making images of your boot drive as well, kiddies.

Anyway, I bring this up because the crash cut short my experience with the Elder Scrolls Online beta last weekend. While I still had a functioning computer, though, I was thoroughly enthralled by this game. The game feels like Skyrim, but with the MMO aspects of World of Warcraft thrown in. From what little I’ve seen, it looks like it’s merged the better qualities of each. The game is slated for release in early April.

In un-related news, I will very likely develop a Howard Hughes-like aversion to the outside this Spring. And Summer.

If you can’t wait that long and are just itching for something new, the long awaited South Park RPG – The Stick of Truth – came out this week. I have not played the game yet, but from what I’ve heard it nails the look and feel of the show perfectly. The gameplay has gotten decidedly more mixed reviews, but I’m still excited to try this out.

In movie news, SyFy has announced the premiere date for Sharknado 2! Our favorite fishy funnel flick will fall on New York Thursday, July 31st at 9PM. Get your chainsaws ready.

Finally, the Oscars were held last week. I couldn’t bear to watch it once I realized they had snubbed the best movie of the year…
